Epidemiological survey of haemoparasitic infection in trade cattle at slaughter in Lafenwa abattoir, Ogun State, Nigeria

An epidemiological survey of haemoparasitic infection in trade cattle was carried out at Lafenwa abattoir, Abeokuta, from August to November 2008. Thin Blood film and Haematocrit Centrifugation Techniques were used detect haemoparasites. A total 452 that comprised 174 cows 278 bulls examined. The breeds included 78 'Red Bororo', 14 'Sokoto Gudali' 360 'White Fulani'. Packed cell volume (PCV), red blood (RBC) count, haemoglobin concentration (Hb), white (WBC) count differential counts WBC, mean corpuscular (MCV) (MCH) measured. Data subjected analysis variance using Genstat statistical software, with sex breed parasite species detected as factors. Results showed 22% the infected haemoparasites while 78% parasite-free. parasites Trypanosoma congolence (4%), Anaplasma central (2%), Babesia bovis (14%), A. centrale + B. (1%) divergens (1%). Parasite identified significantly influenced (P < 0.001) PCV, RBC, Hb concentration. prevalence rates observed is considered be economic importance because animals might sources other healthy herds area.
